The Palais Jacques Coeur
The Palais Jacques Cœur, a gem of flamboyant gothic and 15th-century civilian architecture, is poised to reclaim its bygone splendour thanks to an ambitious restoration project. This monument, built between 1443 and 1451 in the heart of Bourges, embodies the spectacular success of Jacques Cœur, the great paymaster of king Charles VII. Cœur, merchant and adventurer, left an indelible mark on this town with his sumptuous palace, decorated with his symbolic signature – a heart for his last name and a shell for his first – and adorned with his famous motto: “A cœur vaillant, rien d’impossible” (“For the courageous heart, nothing is impossible”).
The Tour de la Chaussée: A Historic Vestige in Peril
Previously called the “Hôtel de la Chaussée” in reference to the former Tour de la Chaussée that Jacques Cœur purchased to incorporate into his new abode, the Palace is a masterwork of French cultural heritage. The tower, which serves as a central dungeon for the building, is a powerful symbol of its grandeur. Nevertheless, over the course of centuries, it has suffered the ravages of time.
Aware of the importance of preserving this unique piece of heritage, the town of Bourges, in collaboration with conservation experts, have launched a large-scale renovation project. The goal is to breathe life back into the Tour de la Chaussée by comprehensively restoring it, particularly focusing on the masonry and the facing. Special attention will be given to waterproofing the building to prevent its degradation.
Commitment of Dassault Histoire et Patrimoine
The Tour de la Chaussée restoration project benefits from the help of the Groupe Dassault, an agent of preservation of French history and culture. The financing offered by the group will facilitate the essential work of restoring the tower, while respecting its original techniques and materials.
A Project in Keeping with Jacques Cœur’s Legacy
The restoration of the Tour de la Chaussée consists not only in repairing an historical building, but also reviving the spirit of Jacques Cœur, whose success and ambition are incarnated in the palace. In supporting this project, Dassault Histoire et Patrimoine takes part in preserving a fascinating piece of history, which continues to inspire with its universal message: For the courageous heart, nothing is impossible.
